Basel is located on the banks of the Rhine River and is the only port city in Switzerland. Basel is rightly considered the cultural capital of Switzerland – it has more than 30 museums and the oldest university in the country. The central place in the city is the Market Square. Here you will see the Town Hall with its bright red facades, which was built in the late Gothic style between 1507 and 1513. One of Basel’s main attractions is the Cathedral, built in the Romanesque-Gothic style. The architectural monument of the 14th century – the Spalentor gate – is perhaps one of the most beautiful defensive fortifications in Switzerland.
