Vesuvius is an active volcano located 15 km from Naples in the Campania region of southern Italy on the shores of the Bay of Naples. The height of the volcano is 1281 m, and the mountain system is the Apennines. It is the only active volcano in continental Europe. There are two versions of the origin of the volcano’s name: the first from the Oscan fest – smoke, the second from the Proto-Indo-European root ves, which means mountain. Vesuvius is recognized as one of the most dangerous volcanoes. Currently, there is information about more than eighty significant eruptions.
In 1880, a funicular was built that allowed access to Vesuvius. The funicular consisted of two large cars powered by a steam engine. The attraction gained immense popularity, becoming a tourist symbol of the region, and a song was composed in honor of the funicular, which is still known today. The eruption of 1944 destroyed the attraction.
In 1953, a chairlift was built on the eastern slope of Vesuvius, gaining popularity among tourists. However, the earthquake of 1980 damaged it so much that it was decided not to restore it. Today, tourists are provided with an equipped hiking trail to visit Vesuvius.
The eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD is the most terrible natural disaster in human history. The last eruption of Vesuvius occurred on March 29, 1944. Volcanologists monitor Vesuvius day and night, measuring the composition and temperature of the vapors, as well as seismic activity.
When the next eruption will occur is unknown, but it will definitely happen. Meanwhile, tourists coming to Italy have the opportunity to ‘conquer’ the summit of Vesuvius.
