The tour begins at the archaeological museum, whose collection will tell you about the life of ancient Mediolanum – what Milan was once called.
Next, you will head to the museum located in the historical part of the city, where traces of antiquity are still preserved.
During the tour, you will see the tower of the ancient Roman circus, a fragment of the ancient city walls with a watchtower known as the Ansperto Tower, and on Briza Street – the ruins of the imperial palace complex from the 4th century.
Then, you will walk through the old streets towards Carrobbio Square, where the ancient city gates were located.
You will visit the Basilica of Saint Ambrose and the adjacent Chapel of Saint Victor ‘in the golden sky’, which are testimonies of early Christian architecture and are famous for their unique mosaics from the Byzantine era.
You will enter the Basilica of San Lorenzo Maggiore, built at the turn of the 4th and 5th centuries AD from stones of the dismantled Roman amphitheater. It is famous for its ancient colonnade in the square, as well as for still preserving its original, very rare early Christian structure for the West.
Traditionally, you will visit one of the chapels (the Chapel of Sant’Aquilino), richly decorated with early Christian mosaics, which served as the burial place for emperors.
On Via de Amicis, in the recently opened archaeological park, you will see the remains of the ancient amphitheater and a small museum.
All these ancient structures are intricately woven into the fabric of the modern city.
