Spanish cities are incredibly interesting, filled with incredible medieval buildings that deserve the attention of every guest of the country. Rupit and Besalú are similar to open-air museums – every connoisseur of medieval history must visit them.
From Barcelona, comfortable transport will take travelers to the Catalan countryside, namely -. Besalú (the distance between the cities is about 120 km), the mysterious “town of witches.”

Rupit
The territory of this unusual mountain settlement belongs to the national park. It is located in a volcanic area, at an altitude of about 890 m above sea level. Stepping onto the land of the ancient village, travelers may feel as if they have traveled back in time. Everything here seems unusual – quiet, measured life, the mighty walls of the fortress, places reminiscent of the life of craftsmen. But the most incredible fact that amazes and delights tourists is the choice of the location for the city. Over 11,000 years ago, a volcanic eruption occurred here, and the solidified lava became the foundation for the construction of the town and was used as building material. An earthquake that occurred around the 15th century destroyed Rupit almost to the ground, but some families still remained living in the city. The city was rebuilt from the 16th to the 17th centuries, styled after medieval buildings.
Besalú
The entire area of this locality does not exceed 5 sq. km, which can be traversed quite quickly. In the last century (the 60s), the town became a national historical complex, and its small square is considered an open-air monument. The history of this charming settlement dates back to the 10th century (according to archaeologists), when the first local castle was built. Film enthusiasts will easily recognize the area featured in the movie “Perfume,” which authentically conveys the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.
