The Royal National Palace, informally also known as the Village Palace (Palácio da Vila), is a medieval palace where Portuguese monarchs lived from the 15th to the end of the 19th century and the only palace that has preserved its architecture and remained almost untouched. The building was only rebuilt or extended in certain places due to the needs of the reigning kings, such as D.Dinis, D. João I, and D. Manuel I. Upon entering Sintra, it is impossible not to notice it – the far-visible chimneys of the royal kitchen shaped like champagne bottles will attract any tourist. The length of the chimney pipes reaches 33 meters. The palace has many wonderfully beautiful halls of indescribable beauty, such as the Swan Hall, the Mermaid Hall, the Chinese Room, the Coat of Arms Hall, and many others. All of them are different in their themes and styles, but at the same time complement each other and create their own charm.
And after that, you will be greeted by the mysterious and mystical Quinta da Regaleira estate, whose owner was the famous millionaire from Brazil, António Carvalho Monteiro, who, after buying the estate, built a kind of palace of philosophy with a beautiful paradise garden. Each object in the garden occupies a specific, non-random place. Everything is arranged in a certain order. There are also suggestions that António Carvalho Monteiro belonged to a Masonic society and that there is exactly the place on the estate where the secret initiation rite of a ‘newcomer’ took place.
