Located on the border of two regions – Brittany and Normandy. These regions are the most visited by European tourists, especially the English. Mont Saint-Michel is an island-monastery where land and stone rise from the sea and are crowned with the golden spire in the sky. In medieval times, the abbey was a fortress that, for almost 10 centuries of its existence, was never conquered. It is one of the most Holy, most important pilgrimage sites in France, where famous knights, French kings, dukes, and ministers came. Here was one of the most powerful French workshops for writing and decorating books.
Behind the massive walls that run along the perimeter of the island, narrow steep streets lead up to the monastery. Along them stand closely packed ancient houses, built according to local rules, tall and narrow from the 14th to the 18th centuries.
Now it is tourists, not pilgrims, who enter the shops, restaurants, and museums located here, stroll along the fortress walls, marvel at the power and history of the monastery, where the most intimate and important parts have been preserved, and admire the landscapes that unfold…
During the revolution, there was a huge prison here, and now it is a reborn abode.
For lunch, you can try delicacies of the local cuisine, in particular, buckwheat pancakes, Breton beer, and much more.
The local tides reach up to 14 m, and during one day the landscape changes completely. Sometimes it is a deserted coastline, and suddenly a mysterious castle rises in the middle of the ocean.
