The Basilica of Saint-Denis is older than the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Paris. In the crypt, in the underground part of the cathedral, lie the tombs of French kings.
Here stand decorated sarcophagi with sculptural representations, in which the bodies of deceased French kings rested. During the Great French Revolution, their remains were thrown into nearby ditches. However, after the revolution, the bones were collected and, since it was no longer possible to determine whose bones were whose, they were placed in a single “brotherly” royal grave.
Here lie the Carolingians, Capetians, Valois, and Bourbons. The burials of the Basilica of Saint-Denis are one of the most sacred places in French history.
