From the castle that existed on this site in the 12th century, the French king Philip Augustus sets out to conquer Normandy. This old medieval castle was rebuilt in the 16th century by Diane de Poitiers – the eternal mistress of King Henry II.
She was twenty years older than the king, but outlived him. She died in 1556, falling during a ride. At the age of 66, she remained a beauty in both face and figure, and, according to stories, looked no older than 30. Until her last day, she continued to get up at 6 in the morning to ride, douse herself with cold water, and then read in bed until noon… And take baths: of milk and moonlight…
The palace and park ensemble was created for Diane by the best masters – architects and decorators. For example, the moving dogs and deer above the clock located over the castle entrance were made for Diane by the famous Benvenuto Cellini, whose works now adorn the Louvre (in Anet – copies). In the architecture of the castle, in its decoration, in the park – everywhere here one feels the harmony embodying the unity of three beginnings: the power of the king, the charm of the woman, and the magic of art…
Currently, it is a private castle, but nevertheless, it is possible to visit the inner chambers, chapels, and the courtyard with a view of the park.
Opposite the castle is a wonderful restaurant with exquisite cuisine and beautiful interiors.
